Biogas can play an important role in the ambition to decrease the emission of greenhouse gases from the transport sector. In the Swedish regions Skåne and Västra Götaland there´s a huge potential and good conditions for production, distribution and end-use of biogas. A survey of the potential for biogas in Sweden has been made. The survey shows that it is reasonable to set a national goal of 20 TWh biogas by the year 2020. This can be compared to the 1,5 TWh biogas that´s being produced in Sweden today. A national goal would benefit technology- and product development, and stimulate industry and employment. A scenario of 20 TWh biogas would also enable export to the rest of the world. Hence the Region of Västra Götaland, the Region of Skåne, Biogas Väst and Biogas Syd are proposing to the Swedish government to develop means of control and set a national goal of 20 TWh produced biogas by 2020.
